Teeth care for dogs
Just like humans, dogs require maintenance for their teeth to be in good shape. Although they don’t get cavities like we do they still are at risk of gingivitis, and plaque and tartar build up. If left unattended, these problems can lead to infections and life threatening diseases. Teeth brushing is an easy and affordable way to prevent these issues.
Your dog’s mouth should be inspected regularly in any case. Issues like bad breath, excessive drooling, missing teeth, growths or lumps in the mouth, swollen or bleeding gums, or a change in eating habits may be indicators of an oral health problem and the dog should be taken to a veterinarian.
In regards to teeth brushing, there are several factors that need to be considered before you begin. Dogs should not be using the same toothpaste as humans because it contains fluoride and is poisonous to dogs. Use one that is available at pet stores and is specially formulated for dogs. Secondly, take it slow the first few times as your dog may not be used to it and may find it a strange experience. Diet can also play a role in teeth health. Dry food is better for your dogs’ teeth as it does stick and cause decay like soft food. Chewing bones and toys may also help strengthen teeth, as long as they aren’t so hard that the teeth could break.
However these suggestions are not substitutes for teeth cleaning. Make sure to inspect their mouth regularly, brush their teeth with the correct products and schedule vet appointments regularly.
